Interesting Tidbits about Mealtime

Mealtime is interesting at my house. Usually Chelsea and I eat with the father of the house, Hector. The host families are told not to speak English with us, so students are forced to use Spanish. It's hilarious because we talk about school supplies, body parts, the weather, food, furniture, how we feel, and such things. Sometimes we run out of words, and we just sit there listening to each other swallow for about 10 minutes. It's fantastic! I have to hold in my laughter.

Also, I do not enjoy the texture of bananas, which is unfortunate because we have them at many meals. So, I have been hiding them in my room. My banana mountain is pretty impressive!

On Monday, before sitting down for lunch, I noticed a spider in my chair. I could have subtly swept it away, but no, not me. I gasped and stared at it until Hector took care of it.

Good times here! I am enjoying my classes more and more. I hope to show you pictures of my home and school soon.

Hey miss Tina, you need to learn to make some bananas foster. Takes 5 minutes, sizzle it in the pan, and pour over ice cream. Yum. When will you post more pics?

Hello Tina, praying for you. I've caught up on your life so far in Guatemala. Continue to take advantage of every moment - look for the new around you each day. God has given you this gift - enjoy!

Interesting dilemma, your banana conundrum. I've actually been losing sleep trying to think up ways to get rid of your fruit mountain you speak of.
So...I've developed a list which should diminish your pile and make room for other things you wish to store in your room. Hopefully not more bananas.

IDEA #1- Invite lots of your new friends over. Tell them it's for a rare, almost extinct custom that your host family wants to start back again. Then when you've got them all together and in a state of confusion as to why they are there, you bring out the bowls of mashed banana all-natural face mask that you've prepared a few hours earlier. (This is sure to get rid of at least 10-20 bananas depending on how many friends you invited and the sizes of their faces of course.) To take it an extra step, after everyone has a good helping of this fruity concoction plastered all over their faces you have everyone sit in a big circle. Get out a Bible and have each person read a verse from their favorite book. See how long it takes before the entire group breaks out in laughter. Surprisingly, this is an excellent way to learn Bible verses...don't ask me how I know.

IDEA #2- From the photos you've posted I really can't tell if you've got brite white teeth or not. I'll assume you do, but if you want even whiter teeth you can use the inside of a banana peel. Yes, using the inside of the peel rub in a circular motion on your teeth. You should notice brighter teeth within two weeks. Green bananas seem to work best. I wouldn't use the overly ripe ones for this.

IDEA #3- Got any warts? My Grandma says that she can make a good banana paste and apply it to the wart and after two weeks it should be gone. She's wart-free so I have to take her at her word on this.

IDEA #4- I think I read in your blog that you're in a fairly advanced country and you are not forced to eat with your hands. Can we assume you use silverware or some sort of eating utensils during mealtime? If so, again you can use the inside of the banana peel to bring back the shine to those utensils. When done, polish with a soft cloth or paper towel. Grandma says it works on leather too. If the home you're staying in has any leather furniture she suggests you try it on a small section before tackling the whole chair or couch.

IDEA# 5- Does it get hot there in Guatemala? If it does, you can make one of my favorite summer treats....frozen banana-sicles. You'll need some wooden sticks, wax paper and of course a freezer. Within a few hours you and your friends and teachers will be enjoying this refreshing yummy frozen treat. Try rolling a few in melted butterscotch or chocolate morsels, nuts or even shredded coconut for extra flavor-goodness. (that's what Grandma does)

IDEA #6- ok...last one, but it's a good one. In fact, you may be able to use your entire banana mountain and even some of your friends leftover ones too. Think snowman sculpture. Grandma says Sasquatch but I think a snowman is easier. Yep you've got it. A full-size snowman replica made entirely out of banana mush. Gather your friends and try to create the largest one you can with all the bananas you've got leftover. You might want to wait and make it the day before you leave, that way you will have more sculpture material available. Also, once it hardens up after a few days it could stand as a lasting tribute.

Well...there you have it. Surely one or more of these ideas are sure-fire ways to rid you of your pesky problem.
